The Canadian Education System

On our home page, we mentioned Nelson Mandaela’s quote on education being the “most powerful weapon”. Nelson Mandela was an honorary Canadian citizen, a purely symbolic honour. Malala Yousafzai, another honorary Canadian citizen, once said:

“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.”

Our 23rd prime minister, Justin Trudeau, agreeing on the importance of education, has stressed the same fact:

We need education to enable people to learn, think, and adapt.

and

“Our natural resources are important, and they always will be. But Canadians know that what it takes to grow and prosper isn’t just what’s under our feet, it’s what between our ears.”

Canadian government subsidizes our education system heavily by consistently allotting over 5% of our GDP on education each year. Education is now mandatory for children up to the age of 16, 18 in the provinces of Ontario, Manitoba and New Brunswick.

All Canadian students and children of certain temporary residents of Canada are entitled to virtually free elementary and secondary education in Canada. Click on the slides to advance to the next one or use the control buttons at the bottom of the slide.
